We all have heard a saying, “control your anger before it controls you”. There’s hardly anyone in this world who doesn’t get angry. Whatever the reason may be, anger is perilous for our own good and for people and everything around us. What Is Anger?

Anger is a powerful expression of being unsettled, disturbed, irritated, bothered, because of a situation or people around us. It can be a result of something wrong, hurtful, annoying, or immoral, that makes someone want to harm the peace of own self or others.

Anger is a trail of destruction. If you get angry and calm down promptly, it is okay, but when you get angry but don’t calm down your temper soon, then this anger drains your mind and body. When you lose your calm, you lose control over your mind and your tongue, it narrows your understandability and creates disagreement, friction, or verbal spat with people around us.

Anger not only consumes you and your physical and mental health but also has adverse impacts on one’s social reputation and on relationships. Even though in some instances the reason for your anger may be moral, but anger is not a solution to fix things.

 

 

Why Do You Get Angry?

It is not necessary that you need a big reason to get angry, but when you find yourself getting angry even on small things, then it is something to worry about. We are living in a competitive world, where daily we work hard to fulfill our dreams and ambitions, that we often forget to take care of our mental health or temper issues. Series of events in our day-to-day life is enough to make someone with temper issues angry. When this feeling of anger is either vent on a family member, friend or colleague then it creates bitterness in your relationship with them. But, there are also some people who vent their rage anywhere and start yelling. Every person desires to work as he wishes, but when the situation starts operating against him, then the person gets offended and gets angry.

 

 

Why Anger Is Dangerous?

Anger not only creates havoc in your personal life, relationships but also impacts your health. Anger has been connected to health problems like anxieties, headaches, stress, high blood pressure, heart problems, risk of diabetes, depression, breathing problems, digestive disorders, weak immune system, hypertension, insomnia, fear, etc.

It also affects our mental health. Whenever someone gets angry, many types of negative thoughts cross one’s mind, which leads to many disagreements, disappointments, and dissatisfaction. In some cases, it can even turn a person violent to self, things, or to others. Besides, it can also lead to violent behavior and emotional or physical abuse.

Apart from this, children of parents with temper issues can not only have a bad childhood but, can make them likewise aggressive. So, never vent your rage on children or in front of children. Repetitive showing off anger can also lead to traumatic stress in children.

 

Control Anger Before It Controls You

The moment you get angry, if you chose to pause and think a while before reacting to anything negative or even absurd, you can easily get over your temper issues. Even if anger is a natural response to any unpleasant situation, ask yourself whether your anger will give you better outcomes? whether your anger can fix things? will your anger get you what you want? Ask yourself whether the situation is appropriate to react in temper? If the answer is NO, hold on and be patient instead of moving in a flurry.

There are many ways of anger management like therapy, online classes, counseling, reading books, self-analysis, yoga, and meditation, etc. But remember that you can never improve yourself without self-acceptance. Self-acceptance is the only motivation to overcome your flaws and weaknesses, yet, you can adopt the following steps in your lifestyle to win over your temper.

  • Meditate, do Balasana or the child pose asana, Surya namaskar, or exercise daily to overcome anger.
  • Practice breathing techniques like Anulom Vilom, Nadi Shodhana Pranayama to control temper.
  • Take long breaths to control your temper.
  • Reverse counting while closing your eyes to control anger.
  • Don’t take things too personally.
  • Get enough sleep for at least 7-8 hours.
  • Pour your heart out, don’t bury the burden of stress. Express yourself, speak to someone, or seek advice or counseling whenever going through a rough stage.
  • Whenever you get angry, drink 2-3 glasses of water to calm your impulses.
  • In the race to achieve your goals, don’t forget to enjoy your family time or me-time.
  • Engage yourself in the things that keep your mind calm.
  • Avoid too much oily and spicy food to control the body heat.
  • Say no to alcohol and sedatives, and pay attention to your lifestyle along with your food and drink.
  • Focus on personal development and spend your time with assertive people.
  • Always think before you speak.
  • Don’t hold grudges towards someone who has hurt you.

 

There is nothing wrong if you are a person who has temper issues, the good thing is anger can help you make a bigger person and can bring positive change into your life only if you try, so control your anger before it controls you.
