India’s Harnaaz Sandhu is the New Miss Universe 2021. She represented India in the race for the biggest beauty pageant in the fashion and beauty world of this year. After Sushmita Sen (Miss Universe 1994) and Lara Dutta (Miss Universe 2000) who glorified India by bagging the miss universe titles, now Harnaaz Sandhu’s name has also been added to this list. Harnaaz Sandhu has won the title of Miss Universe 2021 and with this, she has not only won the hearts of millions but has also brought home the crown after 21 years.

The 70th Miss Universe competition was held in Eilat, Israel on 12th December 2021. Miss India Harnaaz Sandhu has won the title, while Nadia Ferreira of Paraguay was the first runner-up and Lalela Mswane of South Africa was the second runner up topping a lot of 80 contestants. India has now won the Miss Universe crown for the third time. Not just this but the model and Bollywood actress Urvashi Rautela also represented India by being a part of the juries team at the Miss Universe 2021 contest.
Harnaaz Sandhu hails from Chandigarh, born in a Sikh family on 3rd March 2000. She did her schooling and higher education in Chandigarh. Since her childhood, she was profound about fitness, yoga, fashion, and theatre which got her to partake in many beauty events from her early days. She has completed her graduation in Information and Technology and is currently pursuing her master’s in Public Administration.
Harnaaz Sandhu came into the spotlight when she won the 2017 Mebmis Chandigarh Award at the age of just 17. Harnaaz has also won Times Fresh Face, Miss Chandigarh, in 2017, since then her journey to a big win commenced. She later won the Miss Max Emerging Star India 2018, and also managed to bag Femina Miss India Punjab 2019, Miss Diva Universe 2021, and was the top 12 at Femina Miss India 2019.
Apart from winning the title for the country, she has also appeared in Punjabi movies. Harnaaz Sandhu advocates the importance of women’s health and feminine hygiene. She visited an NGO in Dharavi and talked with many young girls shared who shared their experiences and problems. During her Miss Diva tenure, she has also organized a free health camp for women in collaboration with the Israeli Embassy and Rajiv Gandhi Cancer Institute and Research Centre, and Khushi (NGO).

In the final round, all top three contestants were asked the same question by Steve Harvey, the host of the event. They were asked, “What advice would you give to young women watching on how to deal with the pressures they face today”.
To this, Harnaaz Sandhu answered, “The biggest pressure the youth of today is facing, is to believe in themselves. To know that you are unique and that is what makes you beautiful. Stop comparing yourselves with others and let’s talk about more important things that’s happening worldwide. I think this is what you need to understand, come out, speak for yourself because you are the leader of your life. You are the voice of your own. I believed in myself and that is why I am standing here today.”
Harnaaz Sandhu was crowned by Miss Universe 2020 Andrea Meza from Mexico. When the winner was announced she couldn’t hold back her tears and got very emotional.
